Hair restoration and Transplantation

Thinning hair may strike at ages young and old. Men that have hair loss often notice a natural progression of hair thinning as time passes. Women could possibly have hair loss that is spotty in centralized areas of the scalp.  People who have had cosmetic plastic surgery for instance a forehead lift or renovation may experience minimal thinning hair in the incision locations. The condition could be signified by hair thinning or baldness.

Hair loss may occur from disease, pregnancy, trauma to the scalp, certain hair coloring products that cause scalp sensitivity and select medications. The majority of hair loss results because of hormones that affect hair follicles on the scalp. This condition is known as androgenetic alopecia. Hair loss may be treated through non-invasive and invasive remedies. Hair transplantation is popular among men, accounting for over 18,000 procedures in 2008 and in the top five plastic surgery procedures for men. Shampoos and Medications

There are shampoos and scalp therapies such as Nioxin products that help thinning hair. There are medications available to impede hair loss and stimulate re-growth.   For women and men, FDA approved Minoxidil (Rogaine®) may be applied to the scalp. For men only, FDA approved Finasteride (Propecia®) may be taken by mouth. Latisse ® is an FDA approved medication for eyelash hair growth to produce fuller, longer, dark eye lashes.

Hair Transplantation

There are both traditional and modern techniques available to surgically transplant hair into balding areas. These techniques involve the removal of hair follicles from a donor site and the receipt of hair follicles to the balding area. Micro-hair transplantation is one technique that focuses on individual hair follicle transplantation compared to a grouping of hair follicles used in traditional hair transplantation. During hair transplantation, one to four hair follicles, oil glands, muscles and tissue are removed and placed in the scalp’s balded area replace lost hair and stimulate hair growth. The procedure may need to be repeated over the course of a year or more for an optimal appearance. Scalp reduction is a more invasive technique that involves the removal of the balded area and repositioning hair filled areas in order to mask the balded area.    The scalp flap procedure involves the removal of a larger area of hair and its placement in the balded area.

Laser Treatment

Select non-heating lasers happen to be utilized in Europe to stimulate new hair growth, but aren’t authorized by the FDA from the U.S. at this time.

Hair transplantation is anticipated to be a favorite procedure. The final results provide a younger appearance, a good start in self confidence, greater competitiveness in the employment market, and enrichment in day to day activities.   For more information about hair transplants and more contact Mabrey Medical Center for Hair Restoration.
